Human Trafficking Awareness
Build foundational knowledge and awareness to recognize unsafe people and situations, protect yourself and others, and respond in ways that support survivors.
Defining Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a crime that involves exploiting a vulnerable person for labor or commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion. In simple terms, it means someone is being controlled or manipulated into doing work or sexual acts they do not freely choose.
It can happen anywhere—including online—and in communities of every size.
How Exploitation Begins
Trafficking often begins with grooming—a gradual process of building trust and pushing boundaries over time. Trafficking frequently begins with a person the victim knows or meets online.
Perpetrators often look for people with unmet needs—such as emotional support, stability, or basic needs like a place to stay or something to eat—and may present themselves as someone who can help meet those needs. Over time, this trust can be used to manipulate, isolate, and control the person, eventually leading to exploitation.
Why Awareness and Education are Important
Individuals
Awareness and education help people notice unsafe situations before exploitation occurs. When human trafficking is better understood, individuals are better able to protect themselves and others.
Because trafficking often involves manipulation and isolation, it can be difficult for someone to realize they are being exploited in the moment.
Professionals
Professionals who understand human trafficking are better equipped to identify warning signs, respond appropriately, and connect survivors to support and services.
This knowledge strengthens their ability to protect vulnerable people and intervene earlier when concerns arise.
Community
Informed communities are essential to preventing and addressing human trafficking. When people recognize the signs, they are more likely to report concerns to law enforcement, contributing to early identification.
Strong policies and coordinated community awareness make it more difficult for trafficking to occur and help create safer environments for everyone.
